I QUE TAKES TOP PRIZE AT 21st ANNUAL JACK DANIEL’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP INVITATIONAL BARBECUE

LYNCHBURG, Tenn. (October 24, 2009) - I Que from Hopkinton, Mass., can claim the ultimate braggin’ rights in competitive barbecuing, after taking home the title of Grand Champion at the 21st Annual Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue on Saturday evening in Lynchburg (pop. 361), Tenn.

Grand Champions I Que BBQ cooking Team, Hopkington, Mass.

I Que not only captured the top prize in what is considered by competitors to be the most prestigious barbecue contest in the world, but also finished second in pork shoulders/butts, second in desserts and eighth in chicken.

“I’ve been working for 10 years cooking barbecue every single weekend and this is my dream - my absolute dream,” said Chris Hart, chief cook of I Que. “To win the Jack is the ultimate experience in barbecue.”

As Grand Champion, I Que received $5,000 and secured an automatic berth to return to defend their title at the 2010 “Jack.”

To compete at “The Jack,” domestic teams must win a state championship with at least 25 teams or a competition of 50 teams, or win one of the premiere barbecue competitions that qualify a team for an automatic berth.

“Every team that cooked today worked hard to get here and they all deserve recognition, but only one team leaves as our Grand Champion,” said Lynne Tolley, KCBS-certified barbecue judge and great-grandniece of Jack Daniel. “Every competitor comes to Lynchburg hoping to have the winning combination of equipment, team members, ingredients and technique and we congratulate I Que for hitting the mark today.”

Jack’s Old South from Unadilla, Ga., also finished strong as the Reserve Grand Champion, taking home a cash prize of $2,500.

Other top ten winners at this year’s Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue are:

    3. Bub-Ba-Q, Canton, Ga.

Event Details

History of the Big Pig Jig

BIG PIG JIG was born in Vienna, Georgia when a group of self-professed gourmets made wagers on who among them could cook the most succulent pig! That year, 1982, those creative people recommended combining a barbecue cooking competition with an established and well-attended arts and crafts fair and the county’s livestock association annual hog show. The merging of has grown into a festival named twice by the American Bus Association as one of the Top 100 in America, three times acclaimed as one of the Top 20 in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society, and recognized by Georgia Festivals and Association and International Festivals and Association with more than a dozen awards, including Best Georgia Festival in 1999. BIG PIG JIG was listed by Travel Agent magazine as one of America’s Top 500 Festivals, touted by Tom Clynes, author of WILD PLANET! as one of the world’s 1,001 Most Extraordinary , featured on the Food Network’s “All - AmericanFestivals” and a one-hour special entitled “The BIG PIG JIG. BIG PIG JIG was also named to theDiscovery Travel Channel’s top ten list of “World’s Best Barbecue Contests” for the past four years and in 2004 theNational Barbecue News named BIG PIGJIG the Spirit of Barbecue Event of the Year.Twenty teams competed, cooking whole hogs only, at BIG PIG JIG in 1982 and $1,000 in prize money was awarded to the top seven contenders. STUMP & SON, a team from Marietta, Georgia won the grand prize on their “train” grill.

Once the smoke cleared, the crafters packed and headed home, and the hogs were “gone to market,” the community recognized it had a winning combination. The fall setting was ideal, so an October festival was born. A new site located on Interstate 75 near Georgia Highway 215 in Vienna was purchased and developed for the ever-increasing number of participants. Expansion at the facility has been necessary each year to accommodate the event’s growth.

The success of the festival was demonstrated in 1991 when prize money was increased to $10,000. The festival now has expanded activities to include a parade, sidewalk art contest, crafts and collectibles, 5K Hog Jog, QuizFest academic scholarship competition, a scholarship golf tournament, local, regional, and national entertainment, plus a People’s Choice contest where visitors choose the best barbecue of the day!

Twenty-two years after the idea took shape, the contest drew 120 teams cooking over 400 entries of hogs, shoulders, ribs, plus kettles of Brunswick stew, barbecue sauce, and barbecued chicken. The event attracted over 20,000 spectators and required more than 300 judges, 300 volunteers, plus countless pounds of pork. In 2003 the Dooly County Chamber of Commerce awarded more than $12,000 in cash plus trophies to BIG PIG JIG’s top cooks and accommodated huge crowds of festival fun-seekers at the facility now known as BBQ CITY, U.S.A.

More than 25 similar to BIG PIG JIG have appeared across the Southeast since 1982. Some remain; some do not. Often imitated but not yet duplicated, BIG PIG JIG remains the southeast’s largest and Georgia’s oldest and OFFICIAL barbecue cooking contest.

2009 Jack Daniel’s 21st BBQ Invitational

There is nothing quite like the fourth Saturday of October in Lynchburg, Tennessee. Thats when thousands of people head to the Hollow for the annual Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational Barbecue, an event that began in 1989 and is today considered one of the most prestigious barbecue competitions in the world. Teams from across the United States and around the world compete in the categories of Pork Ribs, Pork Shoulder, Beef Brisket and Chicken, as well as Sauces and Desserts.
Considered one of the most prestigious barbecue competitions in the world, the Jack Daniels Invitational will host more than 60 award-winning barbecue teams from the United States and several other countries. Theyll be competing in the categories of Pork Ribs, Pork Shoulder, Beef Brisket and Chicken, as well as “Jack Daniels Sauce” (must contain a little of our hometown product) and Desserts. International teams enjoy being especially creative by entering their “Home Cookin from the Homeland,” while our U.S. championship teams do the same with their “Cooks Choice.”

To qualify for “The Jack,” U.S. teams must have already won a competition in which 50 or more teams participated, or they must have won a competition of at least 25 teams that has been designated a “state championship”. However, not only must these teams be culinary experts, they must also be lucky. With more than 100 teams qualifying each year and because of our limited space in Lynchburg we must also limit the number of the teams. So in early September the names of the qualifying teams go into state lotteries to select the final competitors.

The 2008 “Grand Champion,” 4 Legs Up from Great Bend, Kansas, will return to defend their title. Also appearing at this years Barbecue are the winners of the Houston Livestock & Rodeo Barbecue, the Memphis in May Championship, and the open division of the American Royal Barbeque in Kansas City. Additional teams from Austria, Belgium, Australia, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Puerto Rico, and the United Kingdom are already finalizing their recipes for the big event. And we even have a special “Shade Tree” contest for 36 amateur teams.

Vendors will be on hand to sell roasted corn, homemade fried fruit pies, funnel cakes, ice cream, and many other mouth-watering delicacies. Spectators are encouraged to compete in the Country Dog Contest (canines only!), Bung Pitching and Butt Bowling, while folks from Brown-Forman Cooperage in Louisville, Kentucky, will be on hand to demonstrate how they “raise” the barrels that are used to mature Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey!

The fun begins at 9:00 a.m., judging starts at 11:30 a.m., and awards are presented at 5:00 p.m. (CST). Parking is free at the Moore County High School with free shuttles to the Lynchburg Town Square. Although admission is free, a donation to the Moore County Schools is appreciated as you enter the competition site located just off the Square. (Handicapped parking with special shuttle bus is at the high school.)

The Jack Daniel Distillery will give its free tours from 9:00 a.m.4:30 p.m.

For those who might need lodging overnight, please check out area accommodations.

For more information, call the Barbecue hotline at (931) 759-6930.

COOKIN’ for the CURE

Event Details

This event began in 2005 because a few guys sitting around the barbecue pit wondered how they could contribute to the fight against cancer. We have all been touched by this horrible disease either thru a loved one, friend, co-worker, or acquaintance. Our families have lost our father, grandfather, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends to cancer over the past 11 years alone.

Thanks to your support and contributions to this event since 2005, Cookin’ for the Cure has taken that idea and turned it into over $100,000 for our Valley cancer patients. This event has been instrumental in funding the American Cancer Societys Wigs & Turbans Program, The Breast Prosthesis Program and most recently the Transportation Program in the Rio Grande Valley.

Every year we look to improve this event and increase our donation to the American Cancer Society so they may continue to provide those in the Valley needing assistance during their battle with cancer. We honor those we have lost through our honorarium at each years event and we celebrate the lives of those who are still with us and fighting. It gives us great pleasure each time we see a patient who received a free wig, breast prosthesis or transportation to their cancer treatment. Its hearing of those things that make us feel in our hearts the benefits of this great event.

Join us for our 4th annual event on October 24, 2009 at Dodge Arena and become a partner in the fight against cancer. “Let’s all get Cookin’ for the Cure!!!”
