Jack Daniel’s 25th Annual BBQ Invitational

October 26, 2013

safe_imageHeld every fourth Saturday of October, thousands of people head to the Hollow for the annual Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue. Now in its 25th year, this event is held in the heart of Jack Daniel’s country, Lynchburg, Tennessee (Pop. 361). In recent years, the Invitational has brought over 70 U.S. teams, along with nearly 20 international teams to this tiny town looking for cash prizes and bragging rights as the “World Champion” of barbecue.

As an event that began in 1989, today is considered one of the most prestigious barbecue competitions in the world. The Jack Daniel’s Invitational will host more than 60 award-winning barbecue teams from across the United States and around the world. They’ll be competing in the categories of Pork Ribs, Pork Shoulder, Beef Brisket and Chicken, as well as “Jack Daniel’s Sauce” (must contain a little of our hometown product) and Desserts. International teams enjoy being especially creative by entering their “Home Cookin’ from the Homeland,” while the U.S. championship teams do the same with their “Cook’s Choice.”

To qualify for “The Jack,” U.S. teams must have already won a competition in which 50 or more teams participated, or they must have won a competition of at least 25 teams that has been designated a “state championship”. However, not only must these teams be culinary experts, they must also be lucky. With more than 100 teams qualifying each year — and because of  limited space in Lynchburg, not everyone will get in. So in early September the names of the qualifying teams go into state lotteries to select the final competitors.

How Judges Pick the Jack Daniels Invitational Grand Champion

Qualifying teams compete in eight categories: Pork Ribs‚ Pork Shoulder/Butts‚ Beef Brisket‚ Chicken‚ Dessert‚ Cook’s Choice and Jack Daniel’s Sauce.

In celebration of the silver anniversary, the Winner’s Circle – a separately judged competition of The Jack’s esteemed champions of years past – has been added to the itinerary.
Other Vendors will be on hand to sell roasted corn, homemade fried fruit pies, funnel cakes, ice cream, and many other mouth-watering delicacies. Spectators are encouraged to compete in the Country Dog Contest (canines only!), Bung Pitching and Bag Toss competitions. Folks from Brown-Forman Co-operage in Louisville, Kentucky, will be on hand to demonstrate how they “raise” the barrels that are used to mature Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey!

Man, with the Kansas City competition in the beginning of Oct and Jack’s at the end, it sure doesn’t give serious competition teams much time! Clean the smokers and off they go again.
